Origins Supporting People Separated by Adoption Incorporated - Pat - added 17th August 2009 10:25

Mothers who have lost children to adoption are calling for a Senate Inquiry, and that the Senate inquire into and report on:

  1. Whether State Governments throughout Australia have breached Common Law principles and International Covenants in relation to:
  2. The professional practices in the administration and delivery of adoption and related services, particularly those services relating to the taking of consents offered to parents and children in all States of Australia from 1950- 2009.
  3. Whether adoption practices referred to in clause one, involved unlawful and unethical practices or practices that denied birth parents access to non adoption alternatives for their child.
  4. Whether State government adoption agencies have breached International covenants of human rights and have been involved in neglectful practices that have encouraged child trafficking into Australia.
  5. The Senate to look at uniform legislation of State Adoption Acts.
  6. And what measures would assist persons experiencing distress due to the effects of unlawful and unethical adoption practices.

Adoption separation alone directly affects at the very least 5-6 million persons in Australia. Since Federation there has been an estimated 300,000 women who have lost children to adoption.

An estimated 150,000 children were removed from their mothers over the period from 1950 to 2000 when adoption practices at this time had been deemed unlawful by a New South Wales Parliamentary inquiry into past adoption practices.

All material will be treated confidentially and anonymity will be guaranteed if so desired.

If you would be willing to share your experience, please contact me at searchingformothers@stephenfitzpatrick.com in order to discuss the matter in more detail. Please write INTERVIEW in the subject line to avoid the mail being eaten by spam filters!

The Wright Stuff Poll - Pat - 10th May 2004 17:23

Nikky, our new Forgotten Mothers publicity manager, contacted Channel 5's The Wright Stuff television programme to promote Trackers International and Forgotten Mothers. After looking at our website they decided to run a public poll from 3rd May to 7th May 2004, asking:

'Unmarried mothers were forced to give up their babies for adoption in the 40's, 50's and 60's. Most being forced into Unmarried Mothers Homes and many account of babies being ripped from their mother's arms. Should there be a Public Inquiry into this?'

The results were: 97% Yes, 3% No.

The Wright Stuff can be seen on Channel 5 every morning at 10am and is presented by Matthew Wright.
