Quick Facts:

UNMARRIED MOTHERS WERE TOLD THAT ADOPTION WAS THEIR ONLY OPTION

It was a lie.

  • An unmarried mother was entitled to keep her baby

  • An unmarried mother was entitled to State Benefits to enable her to support herself and her baby

  • An unmarried mother with her baby was entitled to rent- and rate-free housing

  • An unmarried mother was entitled to an additional allowance if her baby was handicapped

  • An unmarried mother who went out to work was entitled to a priority nursery placement for her baby

  • An unmarried mother was eligible for grants and discretionary allowance for layette, pram, cot and bedding

  • An unmarried mother over 16 who wanted to keep her baby but couldn't care for it initially had the option of having her child fostered until she could make a home for her baby

  • An unmarried mother under 16 and her baby were entitled to be placed with the same foster parents until she was eligible for State Benefits and housing

If they had been told the truth, hundreds of thousands of unmarried mothers would have kept their babies.
