Fact Sheet # 8: WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MISSING BABIES OF ELSWICK LODGE?

The annual reports of the Diocesan Council for Moral Welfare reveal that 18 babies have not been accounted for by Elswick Lodge Diocesan Unmarried Mothers Home, Park Road, Newcastle.

 

1960: 55 BABIES WERE BORN

14 babies were placed for adoption.
28 babies went with their unmarried mothers.
1 baby went into Dr.Barnardos.
4 babies were taken into Care.
1 baby was stillborn.
7 BABIES HAVE NOT BEEN ACCOUNTED FOR.

 

1961: 56 BABIES WERE BORN.

29 babies were placed for adoption.
19 babies went with their unmarried mothers.
2 babies were taken into Care.
1 baby placed in Church of England Children’s Society Home.
1 baby died at a few hours old.
4 BABIES HAVE NOT BEEN ACCOUNTED FOR.

 

1962: 50 BABIES WERE BORN

27 babies were placed for adoption.
10 babies went with their unmarried mothers.
3 babies were taken into Care.
2 babies were stillborn.
1 baby died in hospital.
7 BABIES HAVE NOT BEEN ACCOUNTED FOR.


18 babies have not been accounted for.
Their fate is unknown.
